04 / Research & provenance

RESEARCH NOTES

  1. 01

The mark is transcribed as 愁翠. Shūsui matches the dictionary reading of these characters, but the brand pronunciation is not documented directly by its maker. The company, individual smith, manufacturing region and period remain unidentified.

  2. 02

本割込 (Hon-warikomi) denotes inserted-core construction. The visible material boundary supports this interpretation; the inscription alone does not identify a steel grade.

  3. 03

A carbon-steel core is probable based on the pronounced patina and the owner’s assessment; its exact grade and outer-layer material are undocumented.

PROVENANCE

The owner supplied the 285/165 mm dimensions and 160 g weight and confirmed the double bevel, original handle, blade polishing and surface unification. Further history and the age of this piece are undocumented.
